Outdoor dining and living
Whitebeam Wood is all about outside living as well as inside especially with the unique climate that the South Hams enjoys.
With this in mind, we have created 4 separate outdoor living areas.
Sun Terrace
As you drive up to Whitebeam Wood one of the 1st things you will notice about the house is the sun terrace to one side of the house. As the house is South Facing it is the most wonderful sunny spot with its director's chairs. A wonderful location to sit, relax listen to the birdsong, with a coffee or perhaps a glass of something chilled and a good book. With views across the valley, village, and out to sea it really is a lovely spot. It has a little gate so that once it is closed it's a perfect little courtyard area as well.
There are huge sliding patio doors that open up from the lounge onto the sun terrace a lovely extension of the indoor living space.
Lookout Lounge
Take a little wander up the garden and on the left, you will find the Lookout Lounge. As its name suggests you have beautiful views down the garden towards the sea. It is one of the highest points of the garden with glorious views of the West Tower, all that remains of The Collegiate Chantry of St Mary founded in 1372 or 1373 by Sir Guy de Brian. Now a Grade I Listed Building it is said that Chaucer write the Canterbury Tales while staying at the Chantry. Past the Tower and across the village your eye is drawn to the sea.
Outdoor sofas beckon you perhaps with your morning coffee, afternoon tea, or perhaps a great location to chill out with a book. Watching as your dogs run in and out of the wood, where will they pop out next? Or why not choose this as your lunch spot for the day, or perhaps pre-dinner drinks? Perhaps light the little fire pit in the cooler months.
Private Dining in the Secret Garden
Follow the curved steps at the side of the house from the top of the Firepit Garden and you will find yourself in the Secret Garden tucked away from the main garden. A secluded part of the garden which I called it the Secret Garden as you do not really realise it is there.
At the highest point of the Secret Garden, we have sea views! We had brand new decking added and placed the wooden dining table and chairs there so you can tuck into a mouth-watering meal and catch up on the day's events, the perfect spot with views again down to the sea. Add a large sun parasol and a charcoal BBQ and you have the perfect dining location.
If you leave the gates open your dogs can run round the whole outside of the house. It is also a night garden if you close the gates as it can be accessed from the back door by the rear hall giving your dogs a place to go at night which does not involve playing in the wood.
Firepit Garden
As the evening draws in time to head to the fire pit garden which is located at the front of the house and sheltered on 3 sides by a mix of flowering hedges and bushes and a traditional stone Devon wall.
Imagine sitting around a bespoke handbuilt stone firepit with the flames dancing and the heat radiating out while you stargaze as we have very little ambient light so on clear nights the stars make a wonderful canopy.
Pull up an Adirondack chair get ready to toast a marshmallow or 2 and toast to the wonderful days ahead, what a perfect way to end your day as you get the most spectacular sunsets from there.
